In Weddings, Parties & Celebrations
Party food portions per guest decide whether a home buffet looks generous at the halfway mark or runs out before the last slice. The rules are simpler than most hosts expect, and they are the same starting point used to plan catering in Dubai: a standing evening party needs more small bites per person than a seated meal, children count as roughly half a savoury portion but a full sweet portion, and more variety means less of each dish rather than more food overall. This guide turns those rules into a table, a worked example for 12 guests and the mistakes that skew orders.
Party food portions per guest, by format
| Format | Planning rule | Example for 12 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Standing party, no dinner, two to three hours | 8 to 10 savoury bites per adult, 3 to 4 sweet | About 100 savoury pieces and 40 sweet |
| Buffet dinner, seated or semi-seated | One plate equivalent per guest: two mains, three to four sides | Mains for 12 split across two dishes, sides for 12 |
| Afternoon gathering with a cake | 4 to 6 savoury bites per adult plus the cake | About 60 savoury pieces plus cake portions |
| Children inside an adult party | Count children as half a savoury portion, full sweet portion | Four children count as two adult savoury covers |

How variety changes the maths
More dishes means less of each. If a buffet moves from two mains to four, each main should be sized for roughly half the guest count rather than the full count, otherwise the table doubles in food and cost. The same applies to canapé selections: six varieties for a standing party means planning 8 to 10 pieces per guest across all six varieties, not per variety.
A worked example: 12 guests, four of them children
Twelve guests, 19:00 to 22:00, buffet dinner. Count eight adults and four children as ten adult savoury covers. Order two mains — one meat and one vegetarian — sized for ten, three sides, one dessert platter plus a small bowl of sweet bites for the children's table. Keep bread and salads at full portion, because buffets serve salads generously. The result looks abundant on a two-metre table without doubling the warm dishes.

Mistakes that skew an order
- Ordering a full guest count in five different dishes — variety multiplies food; portions per dish should fall as variety rises.
- Counting children as full adult covers for savoury food.
- Forgetting that drinks fill guests: a party with a proper drinks station needs fewer bites per hour.
- No plan for leftovers; agree in advance what happens to surplus food.
